William attended Whitwell High School up until his senior year when he decided to drop out and join the Air Force in order to serve our nation in the Vietnam War. He later obtained his GED and then went on to work for the Chattanooga Free Press. He married his wife, Carolyn, in 1968 and went on to have two daughters and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both his mother and father as well as his granddaughter Emma Rose Potter.
