Harold Melton

'84 Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia

What is Harold Melton known for?

Harold David Melton, a proud alumnus of Joseph Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, class of '84, was born on September 25, 1966 in Washington, D.C. He is well known for his celebrated career in law, having served as the Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court from September 4, 2018 to July 1, 2021.

After graduating high school, Melton continued his education at Auburn University, where he achieved his Bachelor of Science. During his tenure at Auburn, he made history by becoming the first African-American student and the first "independent" (non-fraternity member) to serve as the Student Government Association President for the 1987-88 academic year. In honor of his contributions, the Melton Student Center at Auburn University is named after him.

Following his studies at Auburn, Melton received his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1991. His dedication to his community didn't stop with his formal education. Between 1991 to 2002, he served as a Volunteer Leader for Young Life Ministries and continues to serve as a Board Member of Atlanta Youth Academy and the Director of Teen Ministry at Southwest Christian Fellowship Church.

Prior to his appointment as a justice, he served as Executive Counsel to Governor Sonny Perdue. Before this, Melton spent 11 years serving as Assistant Attorney General in the Georgia Department of Law. His appointment to the court by Governor Sonny Perdue on July 1, 2005, was a historical moment, marking the first time a Republican governor had appointed a justice to the Supreme Court since 1868.

After stepping down from his role as chief justice on July 1, 2021, Melton accepted a partnership at Troutman Pepper, continuing his journey in law. No doubt, Harold Melton's story is one of success, dedication, and commitment to serving his community - truly a notable Wheeler High School alumnus.
