Rich served in Vietnam 68-69 with the 199th light infantry Brigade as a combat medic. He spent almost all of his tour in active combat operations in the southern area of South Vietnam. His courage was clearly seen and recognised by the Army as he was awarded an unprecendented 5 Bronze Star Medals for Valor during his tour. He was credited with saving the lives of several men and displayed uncommon heroism in battle over a difficult 12 month period during the war.
