| About Me | Below was posted on August 10, 2011 - Facebook friends; please know I have wanted to make a comment or respond to your questions many times, I want to explain something...for the past few weeks I have been on medical leave from work. First of all, around Thanksgiving 2010 I was diagnosed with narcolepsy. I was put on medication that usually keeps the overwhelming feeling of daytime sleepiness under control. However, I was still having such a hard time staying awake that it was affecting every aspect of my life. My doctor wanted to change my medication, but due to my scoliosis he was concerned about my lungs. It turns out that over the years my spine had moved into some of the space where my lung should be (chest wall restriction). Now that caused me to breathe incorrectly (re-breathing same air) so I developed another condition called hypercarbia – which is the presence of an abnormally high level of carbon dioxide in the circulating blood. This also causes extreme sleepiness, so my doctor feels this is why we have been unable to control my narcolepsy symptoms. I have fallen asleep just about everywhere, which obviously can cause a lot of problems. I have fallen asleep several times just trying to write this! I am now getting used to using a Bi-Pap breathing machine at night hoping this will regulate my breathing. I am hoping my new treatments will start to control my symptoms so I can get my life back to normal! I am divorced after being married for 18 years. I have 2 children, Nicholas; 17, Amber; 20 and Amber's 23 month old son Connor, all live with me currently. **UPDATE** Since writing this really not much has changed. I am STILL medically unable to work which really SUCKS! I am still experiencing pretty severe symptoms from Narcolepsy. My kids are always finding me asleep around the house in weird places...or positions! I will fall asleep standing up, typing on the computer, doing dishes. They have found me on the floor, outside and yes, even in the bathroom! I am experiencing more Microsleep Episodes where I act out more 'Automatic Behavior', which is when I am in a state that is in-between being awake and being asleep. I'll do things like try making a cup of coffee and instead of adding milk, I'll add OJ, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...I could go on & on but I won't bore you. I will say that Narcolepsy is a horrible illness, which my family and I have slowly come to realize. I have been out-of-work per my Sleep Disorder Doctor since LAST July 19th, 2011!! I have applied for SS Disability and I have been denied twice so I am now waiting for my appeal court date. SS has replied stating that they see I have serious medical issues, but they don't feel they will last 12 months in a row - so I am denied!! WHAT ... really?? NARCOLEPSY is incurable!! So, I don't understand what in the heck they (SS) are talking about. Anyway, not working for over a year is becoming quite difficult...I am going to have to find a legitimate Work-at-Home company. Anyone have any leads? Well, even if no one reads this Update, it was go...(read more) |
