About Me | I graduated from West High School, Gary, Indiana, in 1973, with a football and track scholarship to South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, South Carolina. Most people from SC State know me by my then nickname "Rail". The other athletes from Westside, that accompanied me to college that year, were all extremely popular on campus, as well as myself. We did everything we could to stay out of trouble, which was not easy, when you go to a school where the women outnumbered the men, 11-to-1.(ha,ha) Although, I road the bench on the football team, I was a track stand-out, winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship, as a high jumper, numerous years. I set the school record in the high jump, cleaing 6ft. 9". I left school my senior year, before graduating, to join the U.S. Navy in December 1978. i was assigned to bootcamp at the Naval Station, Great Lakes, Ilinois. While there, I selected as Recruit Chief Petty (RPOC) for company 952 (State Flags). After bootcamp, i received orders to the Navy School of Broadcasting, at the Navy Defense Information School, Fort Benjamin Harrisong,IN. Following graduation, I was subsequently assigned to the pre-commissioning crew of the USS Cimarron (AO-177), in San Diego, CA, becoming the ship's first journalist. After the Cimarron was released from the Avondale Shipyards, the pre-commissioning crew was transfered up to the San Francisco Bay area, where the ship was officially commisioned at the Naval Supply Center, Oakland, CA., in January 1981. In 1982, the Cimarron changed homeports to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Onboard ship, I was the ship's official photographer and editor of the Cimarron's first cruise book. During my tour of duty on the Cimarron, I had the opportunity to make a Western Pacific (WESTPAC)deployment to Guam; Singapore, Republic of the Philippines; Hong Kong; Pusan Korea and Sasebo Japan. Following 5 years of duty, on the Cimarron, n the spring of 1983, I was re-assigned to the staff of Commander Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, where I worked the Public Affairs Office. In my official capacity, I was the staff photo journalist, wrote feature stories, served as a speech writer, rain the Navy speaker's bureau, and assisted in the coordination of major military public relations events, including Armed Forces Day programs, and Blue Angels airshows. In the spring of 1987, I was re-assigned to the Navy Recruiting District, San Francisco, as the comand's staff journalist/editor of the command's monthly newsletter. In 1990, I was assigned to the Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit (NORU), Pensacola, FL, as a trainer/inspector for Navy Recruiting District Journalists. Following that tour of duty, in late December of 1993, i was re-ssignded to the staff of Commander Naval Base, Treasure Island, CA. While on the admiral's staff, I served as Chief Journalist and admiral's speech writer. I also was a co-ordinator of Navy Fleet Week activities in San Francisco, and represented the Navy on the Oakland Chamber of Commmerce. In the spring of 1997, I was re-assigned as the Public Affairs Officer for Navy Recruiting Area EIGHT, Oakland, CA, where I retired from active duty on January 31, 1999, after 20 years service. During my Navy career, I took advantage of the Navy's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and earned my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Master's Degreee in Public Administration, while attending classes at night and weekends. I was also fortunate to be awarded the Navy Commendation Medal; several Navy Acheivement Medals; and other numerous awards and citations. I was married and divorced twice, while in the Navy, and have a son, Thomas, born in Hawaii, March 19, 1986. He was a high school All American Defensive tackle, graduated from Iowa State College, also has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, and is planning a career in the U.S. Armed Forces. Currently, I am back home, in Gary, Indiana, working as an auto sales consultant, at Bosak Honda of Michigan City, Indiana, after having worked in a variety of sales jobs, since leaving the Navy. I am active in my church and community events. Interests and Activities: Bowling; Computers; Photography; Chess. I am also the Church Minstry Chairman for the North Lake County Chapter of Gideons International. I also attend the Lake County Juvenile Correctional Facility, Crown Point, Indiana, each ...(read more) |
