He was born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana, graduating from West Lafayette High School and Purdue University. He worked for International Paper as an Engineer. He served his country in the Navy from 1968 to 1970. Ted loved being with family, playing with his grandchildren, golf, fishing and being outdoors. He was a long time Purdue fan and enjoyed watching them play basketball and football.
