May Chris rest in peace. my condolences to her family & friends. I had Chris in a few classes at WCHS my jr & sr year. I was in the class of 1969. The world is in a better place because Christine was in it & I am a better person because I had Chris as a classmate. May God bless her family & friends & everyone who had the opportunity to cross her path. I was on the varsity basketball team with Bob Stiles, Gail Anderson, Dave Samuelson, Gary Sumnicht, Jim Tice, Jerry Gustaveson, Scott Hazzard, & Bob Johnson. These guys were like my brothers as we went to battle together to win basketball games & to proudly represent the WCHS Spartans with pride. Our coach, Barry Porter was my favorite high school coach as he no only taught us the game of basketball, he taught me & my teammates many of Life's lessons. Coach Porter's teachings I truley believe prepared me for my personal life & for my 2 careers. I was a juvenile probation officer for 20 years & a high school teacher for 16 years in the Clark County School District in southern NV (5 years at Clark High School in Las Vegas & 11 years at Liberty High School in Henderson) I was very fortunate in my teaching assignments were Psychology & Criminal Justice. I earned my BA Degree in Psychology & my minor was Criminal Justice. Both were at Long Beach State where I had a baseball scholarship. I pitched & played right field when I wasn't on the mound. i had a very successful jr year at Long Beach State & I was fortunate to get drafted by the Kansas City Royals as a pitcher. My dad gave some good advice & talked me finishing my degree (I only needed 4 more classes to earn my BA degree in Psychology, I had 1 more year of college eligibioity & my dad was confident that I would get drafted after my sr year. I got the same advice from coach Porter when I asked him to help me decide whatvto do. After all, the money offered to a player being drafted in the late rounds isn't eye opening. The Royals offered me a $1500 signing bonus & $450 a month plus room & board to play in the rookie league. After talking with my dad & coach Porter, I knew they were both wise men & I didn't sign a contract with them & I decided to stay in school , get my BA Degree I play baseball my senior year & focus on getting my degree & having another good year on the Long Beach State baseball field. TO make a long story short, I won my 1st 3 starts on the mound & when I played in right field I was batting 378 with 7 doubles & 2 home runs. I was doing my bullpen workout getting ready to pitch against UCLA in a non conference game when the worst thing that could happen. Yes, unfortunately I tore my labrium. Our team surgeon tolld me that I didn't give my arm enough rest between starts. He also said if you are a pitcher in college, just pitch & don't play another position.. well they didn't invent Tommy John Surgery yet or PRP so my baseball career was over. SO I got a great job working as a juvenile probation officer for 20 years 7 I coached baseball. Some of my coaching was coaching the pitchers on the freshman & JVbaseball team at WCHS which was very rewarding for me. Thank you Dad & thank you coach Porter for prparing me for the real world. AGAIN may God bless Christine & her family & friends.
