| About Me | Before initiating my extensive career in State government in August 1968, I attended College of the Siskiyous (COS) in Weed for one semester in 1967. I was anxious to leave Weed and I moved to Los Angeles in the Spring of 1968. The day that I arrived in Los Angeles, I was hired by Sunset House in Culver City and subsequently held a job in Compton. Eventually I relocated to Sacramento after the Watts riots. In the summer of 1968, I attended Heald's Business College in Sacramento. I learned Gregg Shorthand and received certificates with A's. My concentration was International Business (IBM). I was interviewed for a State job and three weeks later, in August 1968, I began my career with the State of California at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) snd attended Sacramento City College at nighy. After a couple of years at the DMV, I gained more experience in a few different State departments and the Assembly Secretary Pool. I advanced to a Senior Stenographer and Supervisor in the Department of Health Services Civil Rights Office. Next, I advanced to a Staff Services Analyst with the newly reorganized California Department of Social Services (CDSS). After approximately two years I was promoted to an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) with the Operations Assessment Bureau (OAB). Several years later, after travelling all over California reviewing welfare departments for compliance issues, I was transferred to the CDSS Fraud Bureau. Later I was assigned to the newly created Recovery Bureau. My major assignment was to analyze the counties' overpayment and underpayment activities. While working in the Recovery Bureau, I volunteered to work for FEMA on the Alameda County Loma Prieta Earthquake project in 1986. I was a Case Worker for FEMA for six weeks in Oakland. The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) presented certificates to a coworker and me for our outstanding service with FEMA and the community. The Recovery Bureau was eventually eliminated due to a departmental reorganization and I was reassigned to the Fraud Bureau. I was responsible for referring cases suspected of fraud to the county welfare departments for further action. After several months, I was assigned to the Adult Program Management Bureau located on Folsom Boulevard. My basic assignment was to write policy and respond to correspondence from SSI/SSP recipients. I retired early; however, I immediately went to work in the private industry for major technology companies, such as, the following: Sprint (Natomas), Verizon (Folsom City), and Apple Inc. (Elk Grove). I continued to pursue my undying desire for higher education in the evenings at CSUS over the years, as follows: Master of Social Work Three Year Program 2006 - 2009 Gerontology Administration 2009-2011 Gerontology Administration, Master of Science Degree, CSUS, May 2011. Bachelor of Arts Degree (Social Welfare) 1975. Associate of Arts Degree with Distinction (Sociology), Sacramento City College 1972. • During the summer months, I worked for Kelly Services where I was assigned as a Reader and Scorer for the Sacramento County Office of Education CELDT program. l also worked at the Wells Fargo National Business Banking (NBBC). Frequently, I received recognition for my advanced customer service skills at the NBBC casino party and the next year at a dinner cruise around the San Francisco Bay. • I happily attended my 25 year Weed High School reunion in 1992. I was delighted to see several classmates that I remembered. Later in 1999 we attended my classmate's 50th birthday celebration in Sacramento. It was great to see familiar faces again. • In July 2003 I attended my maternal family's reunion in Weed at the "Charles 'Charlie' Byrd Community Park" named after my deceased brother, Sheriff Charles Edward Byrd. It was great to visit with "family" and friends from my childhood in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. Currently, I plan to advocate for active senior citizens. I hope to have a future filled with peace, love, h...(read more) |
