Michael Gilbert
Class of 1985
Army, 8 Years
Originally joined the Army Reserve in 1985 (right after graduation!) to help pay for college. I was a radio operator with an engineer battalion based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
In 1988 I decided that I wanted to pursue a full military career. I transferred to active duty and was offered serveral career fields. Being a big "Patton" fan, I immediately jumped at the opportunity of becoming an armor (tank) crewman. I served two years in Mannheim, Germany (with the 8th Infantry Division).
In 1990 I was transferred to the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. I wasn't there long before Iraq decided to invade Kuwait. I deployed with the division to Saudia Arabia and Iraq in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Shortly after returning to the United States in the summer of 1991, I was faced with a tough decision: continue on in an Army that was starting to downsize (and thus curtailing promotions) or transfer to the Army Reserves and continue being a tanker, at least, part-time.
I opted for the latter. In November 1991 I was offered an early discharge to the reserves. By that time, my family had relocated to Tucson, Arizona; so, I transferred to an armor unit that was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.
I served there until the unit was disbanded in 1993.
