About Me | John's History I was born September 13, 1939 in Oakland, California. At 2 ½ years old I came to live in Pawhuska, Oklahoma with my father's Mother and Father. Some of you might remember them. I of course called them Grandpa and Grandma but most people knew them as Uncle Powell Briscoe who was a pastry baker at Crockett's Bakery and Aunt Emm who along with her sister Aunt Mary Ormand did a lot of the cooking for Indian feasts. I started school in the first grade with Mrs. Leonard at Indian Camp because we lived near the East end of 14th Street. I lived much of the time near the foot of Flannigan Hill so I attended Franklin Grade school but also some time at Union. I went to PHS through my Sophomore year. I played trombone in Mr. Arnold's band and enjoyed math. In 1956 we moved to Warrensburg, Missouri and I attended Warrensburg Public High School my Junior and Senior years, graduating in 1958. I then attended Central Missouri State College (now University) studying Engineering and Math. I again was in the band playing both trombone and bassoon. I played with the Ed Barnes Combo for a number of gigs at colleges in the area. We moved to Marshall, Missouri and I met Mary Ann Williams who I later married. In May 1960 I enlisted in the Army with basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood then from July 1960 to March 1961 I was at Ft. Monmouth in New Jersey for advanced electronic training (if I told you what I did, I would have to kill you). While I was there I was a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps which had a strong history competing with other D&Bs in a very strong D&B area. In April 1961 I married my lovely wife Mary Ann and immediately left for the 17th Signal Battalion at Neureut Kaserne in Karlsruhe Germany. Our job was to provide field communications for NATO Headquarters in the event of war with the Soviet Union. I arrived there shortly before The Berlin Wall was built. In 1962 Mary Ann joined me in Germany and in January of 1963 gave birth to our son Cimarron in Heidelberg. In April of 1993 I was discharged from the Army and in August I went to work in St. Louis, Missouri as a Mechanic, Electrical and Radio for McDonnell Aircraft building Phantom fighters and working on the Gemini space craft. I worked in the Wire Crib, Blg 2 (or 1 - which ever name it had at the time); Stand-Up Wing Line in Blg 100 but most of the time at Conductron (under its many names) in St. Charles. I left MAC in August of 1974. In 1965 we added our son Shenandoah to our family. I joined the St. Charles, Missouri Jaycees and enjoyed participating in their programs to develop leadership through community development. In 1974 I went to work with Achievement Associates Inc., a Management Development company helping companies to communicate their goals within the company better. It was a very rewarding time in my life. I went through some career changes spending a few years in Facilities at ACF (formerly know as American Car and Foundry) in St. Charles. I helped Jack Turpen in the move from Earth City back to St. Charles. I left during the 2nd Carl Icahn layoff. I spent the last 12 years with Unigraphics, the CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) system developed at McDonnell and used at General Motors as well as many other places. I was in Inside Sales working with customers using a mid range product called Solid Edge. It is used by Charles Machine Works (Ditch Witch) Perry, OK, Arctic Cat, Bobcat and many others. It was a very rewarding career. Around 1999 I had a life changing experience. I received an email saying they were looking for a long lost relative named John Briscoe who was born in 1939. I replied and soon received a phone call from a half sister that I never knew I had. I became re-acquainted with my Mother who I had not seen since 1945 and found that I had a complete 'nother' family in California including 2 sisters, a brother, a Korean adopted brother and all their kids. That was quite a change from an 'only child'. We have visited back and forth a number of times. After retiring in 2007, Mary Ann and I have tried to spend as much time traveling as possible. China, Costa de Sol in Spain, Cancun, and as much of the US as we can. We enjoy historical areas such as Williamsburg and scenic areas such as the National Parks of the West. We recently topped off Route 66 into Santa Monica by way of Oatman, AZ. Other interests are Old Timey or Mountain Music. We became friends with Jimmy Driftwood, the author of 'The Battle of New Orleans', 'The Tennessee Stud', The Wilderness Road' and about 5,000 other songs. We spent a number of wonderful weekends with Cleda and Jimmy at his ranch in Timbo, Arkansas before they passed...(read more) |
