About | SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Richard L. “Dick” Barto, 68, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, in San Antonio, after a long struggle with illness. Dick was born May 6, 1950, in Warren. Dick’s high school years were spent at Warren G. Harding High School where he graduated in 1968. He played first trumpet in the marching band and also organized a rock ‘n roll band that was locally well known. Dick also was on the golf team and played in and won many golf tournaments. He was 3 years old when he played in his first tournament. His family is a well- known golf family in the Warren area. After high school, he attended Kent State University and later University of Texas. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for bravery. During his working years as a businessman in San Antonio, he owned a construction and remodeling company. He also owned the Dairy Queen in Alamo Heights for several years. Dick loved to play golf and played in several golf tournaments during his earlier years in San Antonio. He enjoyed following several sports, especially the Spurs and the Cowboys. This was often one of the topics that he and his sister Sandy had during their daily phone calls. Fishing was also a fun hobby of his. He especially liked the all day fishing trips to area lakes. Going out to lunch was among his most favorite of activities and this was a daily practice of his. Dick was a go-to person — when somebody wanted to know anything about cars, he always seemed to know the answer. Dick also knew a lot about building and fixing things. Friends would always say, “He could fix anything.” In fact, one of his favorite things to do, from the time he was a little boy, was to take things apart and put them back together. Sometimes there might even be a leftover part. The internet was his home companion and he was always looking for a new gadget or a medical cure for himself and others. He loved doing for others and was always offering to help somebody with a home project. Dick will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Genevieve; stepdaughters, Yvette Allen and Gini (Raith) Franz; sisters, Sandy (Arthur) Alder and Carol Barto (Michael Keller); brother, Bob (Vivian) Barto; sister-in-law, Terry Barto; niece, Dawn (Paul) Haut and their son, Ethan; niece, Jill Sands and her daughter, Reese; niece, Amanda (Alex) Jewell and their children, Anna and Athena; niece, Cheryl (Wade) Chandler and their children, Braden and Audrey; and several special cousins. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Kathryn and Tom Barto; and brother, Tom Barto Jr. A military funeral is being planned. If desired, memorial contributions may be sent to Fisher House, 3623 George C. Beach Rd., Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234 |
