| About | On Good Friday, April 7, 2023, Michael Anthony Faia, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife of 64 years by his side. He was born August 18, 1932, to Sara Ingolia Faia and Michael A. Faia, Sr., who predeceased him. Michael was 90 years old and a lifelong resident of the greater New Orleans area. Michael was also preceded in death by his sister, Sr. Anglea Faia, MSC, brothers Joseph A. Faia, Sr., Anthony N. Faia, Sr., and his sister-in-law, Patricia Meyers Faia. Michael is survived by his adoring wife, Judith Landry Faia, and three loving children, Christopher D. Faia (Stacy), Nicolette T. Faia-Smith (Albert), Michaelynn Faia Collins Markey (Daniel), six brilliant grandchildren, Dr. Claire D. Faia, CRNA, Dr. Celeste E. Faia, Ph.D., Sean Michael Collins, US Navy, Victoria F. Cummings, BSN (Austin), Madeline Anne Markey, and Olivia Claire Markey, two step-grandchildren Brittany Schmidt-Musso, CRNA (Katie) and Ryan Anthony Schmidt, BSN (Courtney), one great-grandchild, Savannah Anne Cummings, two step-grandchildren Lainey Danae Schmidt, and Meryl Jean Musso, sister Geraldine A. Faia, and brothers Louis J. Faia (Barbara) and Salvador W. Faia (Kathy), sister in law Betty Baye Faia and an abundance of nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his adopted feral porch cat, affectionately named "Sour Puss," who only loved him. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, fantastic father, proud grandfather, great grandfather, heroic brother, and most importantly, the Life of every party! Michael graduated from Warren Easton High School, New Orleans, in 1951. In August 1951, Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he flew combat missions during the Korean War. He was stationed at Tachikawa Air Base for two and a half years of his four years in the Air Force. Michael simultaneously earned a degree in Aeronautics from the University of California Los Angeles. After completing his enlistment with the US Air Force, he enrolled in the Charity Hospital School of Radiology in 1955, where he obtained certification as a certified radiologic technologist. He worked for the Veterans Administration (VA) as an X-ray Technologist for 35 years and retired as the Chief of the X-ray Department. In 2022 Michael was awarded a proclamation from Kenner Mayor, Michael J. Glaser, for being the oldest living member of the Kenner VFW Post 7732, of which he was a beloved member. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 350 in Metairie, La. While his list of accomplishments is vast, his legacy is rooted in his selflessness, his love of God, his family, and our country. He would most want to be remembered for his love of a good party, love of all things Mardi Gras, cheering for the New Orleans Saints & LSU Tigers football teams, perfectly boiled crawfish & crabs, his "secret recipe" for Long Island Iced Tea, his "keen fashion sense," love of fast cars, motorcycles, good food, a strong martini with extra olives, his detailed description on "How to clean a Caribbean Spiny lobster" (hopefully to air soon on the Food Network), a great time and a life well lived. Please join our family for Michaels BIG SEND OFF. If you wish to honor Mikes unique fashion sense, please wear your most outlandish "Big Mike" inspired outfit (crazy pants, loud shirts, plaid, stripes, or anything lavender.) In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation, in his name, to the Kenner VFW Post 7732 or American Legion Post 350 Metairie, Louisiana. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd, New Orleans, on Friday, April 14, 2023, starting at 9:15 AM, followed by a Memorial Mass in the Chapel at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. |
