Michael R. Herbaugh
Class of 1966
Marine Corps, 10 Years
While attending the University of Tennessee, Michael enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard and was an honor graduate from boot camp. He obtained the rank of Specialist 4th Class before transferring to the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program,
Michael was a successful veteran of the United States Marine Corps and was a Captain at the time of his honorable discharge. As a First Lieutenant, he was the Headquarters and Service Company Commander for 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. Captain Herbaugh then served a tour as an Inspector Instructor in Montgomery, Alabama. In his last assignment on active duty, Captain Herbaugh was the Commanding Officer of Marine Air Base Squadron 32 while stationed at Marine Corps Air
Station, Beaufort, South Carolina and formally transferred squadron personnel, equipment, and the command flag from Beaufort to Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina. After his discharge, Michael was hired by Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC, to start and implement the installation’s natural resources and environmental protection program. In 1988, Michael was recognized by the Secretary of the Navy with the Special Individual Recognition Natural Resources Conservation Award for his outstanding achievements in natural resources at Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC.

Beach, VA for duration of enlistment. Served aboard aircraft carriers "America" and "Constellation" in the Gulf of Tonkin. First cruise, from Norfolk Naval Base, on "America" was an "around the world cruise" with liberty in Guantanamo Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong,Phillipine Islands (Subic Bay), Sasebo (Japan), Sydney (Australia) and Wellington (New Zealand). Became a "Shellback" on 24 April 1968 by crossing the equator. Second cruise on "Constellation," from San Diego Naval Base, with liberty in Hawaii, Phillipine Islands, Hong Kong, Yokosuka (Japan). Being in the US Navy was a great experience!

We supported their efforts. Served for a year in Central Louisiana supporting the A-10 Flying Tigers at England AFB. Served for two years on Air Force Reserve.
