Date of Passing Aug 27, 2015
About Humoresque Martin Smothers, beloved mother and sister, passed away peacefully at 6:35 p.m. Aug. 27, 2015, at Zicklin Hospice in New York, with her daughters and sister by her side.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Smothers; and by her parents, Ollie and Luther Martin. Humoresque was born March 10, 1937, in Flora, Miss. She was a 1955 graduate of Central High School in Jackson, Miss., and was married to Gene at Parkway Baptist Church in Jackson on Aug. 11, 1957. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University and her Master of English from Georgia State University. She taught high school literature with great passion and purpose: she hoped to inspire her students by the beauty and wisdom to be found therein.

Humoresque was an educator, an avid reader with a yearning for knowledge and a love of literature and history. She loved teaching, her students, her friends, her family and her life. She taught for many years, most of those in Bowling Green, where she was a beloved teacher and friend. Later in life, she taught in Seoul, Korea, and Lisbon, Portugal, where she pursued her lifelong dream of traveling across Europe and Asia. She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Whitehead and Alice Bisgrove; her sister, Jacque Christian; and two brothers, Bobby Martin and George Martin.

A memorial service was held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in New York at the West Side Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 150 W. 83rd St., New York, NY 10024.
