About Edward S. Parsons Jr. of Greentown died Monday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife is the former Melva Lee Payne. The couple celebrated 63 years of marriage in August.
Born in Greentown, son of the late Edward S. Parsons Sr. and Susie Ethel Wolff Parsons, he was a member of Blooming Grove Baptist Church. Edward was a 1944 graduate of Greene-Dreher High School, Newfoundland, and a 1952 graduate of East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in science education. While attending East Stroudsburg, he was involved in many activities, including the student senate, the World Outlook, the FTA Who's Who, vice president of his class, Kappa Delta Phi and Sigma Zeta Tau.
Edward honorably served his country with the Army in the 88th Infantry Division during World War II, where he received the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
He began his teaching career at East Stroudsburg Junior High School, then taught physics at Newfoundland High School and retired after a 30-year educational career from Wallenpaupack Area High School in 1982.
After retiring from his teaching career, he worked for Sterling Building Components of Hamlin and the Greentown Agway as a Stihl equipment mechanic, where he was the oldest person to obtain a gold-level Stihl certification. He retired from Agway in 2012 at the age of 86.
Edward enjoyed working on cars, and he was well-known in the area for his skills repairing televisions. He was a member of American Legion Post 859, Newfoundland, and Salem Lodge 330, Hamlin.
He is also survived by two sons, Daniel Edward Parsons and wife, Beverly, Hartford, Maine; and James Edward Parsons and wife, Diana, Greentown; a brother, James Herbert Parsons and wife, Margaret, Glen Cove, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Leah, Rachel, William and Richard; three nieces and a nephew.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallenpaupack South Elementary Center, Route 191, Newfoundland, with services by the Rev. Doug Rhine, pastor Blooming Grove Baptist Church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Greentown Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Frey-Fetsock Funeral Home Inc., LaAnna.

Only one teacher like this comes along in a lifetime, and Mr. Parsons was it. Mr. Parsons was hands down the best teacher I ever had. He could take a complicated subject, and bring to a level that anyone could easily understand and master. He was my physics teacher in 1973-1975.
