Date of Passing Mar 21, 2026
About The family of David Allen Marple of Frederick, Maryland is saddened to announce his peaceful passing while surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the age of 90 years after a relatively short illness. ??Dave was born in Luke, Maryland to Bersey & Regina Marple who preceded him in death along with his wife of 55 years Saundra and his Granddaughter Christin Funderburk, his brother Bob and wife Annajean, their daughter Andrea, as well as his brother Don and wife Midge. Dave is survived by his daughter Arlynn and her husband Chris Funderburk, his granddaughter Candace Funderburk and her partner Sean and their three sons, Dave's Great-Grandsons Samson, Odin, and Maverick. He is also survived by his brother Gary and wife Barb Marple along with many nieces and nephews. ??

Dave graduated from Bruce High School and continued his higher education at Frostburg State College where he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree and later received his Masters of Education degree. He worked for the Frederick County Board of Education for his entire career starting out as a PE Teacher, then moving on to be the Principal of the Outdoor Schools Camp Greentop and Mar-Lu Ridge. He then became the Principal at Walkersville Middle School and ended his career as the Supervisor of Maintenance. Many students crossed his path during his career and he is remembered fondly by all.

The most important part of Dave's life was his salvation and his church. He was a member of Calvary Church in Walkersville, Maryland for almost 70 years, literally from the moment that he and his wife Saundra moved to Frederick up to the very day he passed away. He loved the Lord and he loved that church and it can said that without a shadow of a doubt he recruited many souls for Heaven up to his very dying day. He was an amazing, truthful, stalwart, generous, completely wonderful man. A true testament of what it is to be a Christian.??

To say that Dave was a fierce competitor with his athletic ability is an understatement. From his early years in high school and college with his storied basketball career that includes many accolades and Maryland State Awards including being inducted into the Frostburg State College Hall of Fame and culminating with a hard fought for slot on the Baltimore Bullets basketball team. He also excelled in soccer and baseball in those years. In his early 20's he picked up golf clubs for the first time and well it didn't take him long to master that sport. He always said that he loved the game of golf because as much as he loved team events, he really loved competing with and beating himself; to this day, he holds the course record of a 62 at his favorite golf course Glade Valley Golf Club in Walkersville, Maryland. He was a "scratch" golfer which means that he didn't carry a handicap and in his lifetime, he made 12 Holes in One (2 of which he made in his 80's). He loved the Glade Valley Golf Club and was actually the very first member there! Dare I say that he was well loved and cared for at Glade too. A HUGE thank you to all of you out there who put that chair up in the clubhouse for Dave to sit in while you all chatted after his rounds each day as Dave played golf 6 days a week while he was able, for providing him with his VIP cart, and for allowing him to play whichever hole in whatever order he wanted to play on any given day. ??

Dave started playing the clarinet early in life...really early in life, he had perfect pitch and could play and also sing like an angel. He loved his music, mostly all of the old hymns and he loved playing and singing the most with his brothers and extended family. Family was super important to Dave, in fact, next to his Christianity, family was everything to him. The Marple Family can tell story after story about how they'd always sit and enjoy the brothers playing and how much they delighted in joining in the fun. ??

Dave's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 11th, 2026 at 10am at Calvary Church, 8234 Woodsboro Pike, Walkersville, Maryland, 21793.??

In lieu of flowers, Dave loved Jesus, his family, and his church. If you would like to show your love for him, please visit his beloved Calvary one Sunday. David Allen Marple
