Capt David G Smith USN Ret.
Capt David G Smith USN Ret.
Class of 1950
Navy, 26 Years

Two weeks after completing high school at age 17 David Smith arrived at the Naval Academy and joined the Class of 1954. After second class summer cruise, during vacation time, he hitch-hiked to New London, CT to participate in a one-week submarine indoctrination - convincing him he wanted to become a submariner.
After graduating in the top ten percent of his class he reported to the heavy crusier TOLEDO. He soon qualified as Officer of the Deck and thereafter the Commanding Officer selected him as one of the two officers qualified as General Quarters and Refueling OOD. During that tour he applied for submarine training, reporting to New London in June 1955. Graduating in the top ten percent of his class he was assigned to the diesel-electric HARDHEAD where he qualified and then applied for nuclear power training. The interview with Admiral Rickover was successful and after graduating with the 4th nuclear training class (the first member of his USNA class so trained) was assigned to the pre-commissioning crew of SWORDFISH - Qualifying for command in 1962. During that tour he served as Communications and Electronics Officer and then as Main Propulsion Officer. Both HARDHEAD and SWORDFISH conducted Top Secret missions in the North Atlantic in support of the national defense. SWORDFISH then conducted several more Top Secret missions in the Pacific.

Admiral Rickover then selected him to serve as the first Engineer Officer at the S3G prototype at the GE site in Ballston Spa, NY. In early 1963 he reported to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as XO of the pre-commissioning crew of JACK, a THRESHER class submarine distinguished as the only nuclear submarine with counter-rotating propellers. His next assignment was as XO of the Polaris submarine ROBERT E. LEE. After completing prospective commanding officer training he took command of the USS JACK (SSN605) in 1968. During that tour the ship completed several Top Secret missions, was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation medal, was ranked in the top quarter of the Atlantic Fleet by the Operational Reactors Safeguards Examining Board and received the Battle Efficiency “E,” In July 1972 he took his family to Hawaii where he had been assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff for Commander Submarine Force Pacific. He then took command of the submarine tender HOLLAND that was undergoing overhaul in the Bremerton shipyard. Sailing through the Panama Canal the HOLLAND arrived in Holy Loch, Scotland, where it serviced the Atlantic Fleet Polaris/Poseidon submarines. In 1974 he reported as Commander Submarine Squadron 18 in Charleston, SC.
He retired from the Navy in 1980.
