About | DOUGLAS's Obituary Douglas Henry Leatherman, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center on Friday morning, May 19, 2017. Douglas was born January 25th, 1940 to Henry Abraham Leatherman and Bertha Evelyn (Winfield) Leatherman in Mansfield, Ohio. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Ashland University and his Master’s Degree from Appalachian University. On April 17th, 1965, Douglas married the love of his life, Moree Benson in Wabasso, FL. He taught Art, Photography and History at Vero Beach High school for 30 years. He was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years. Douglas was an avid reader, gardener, fisherman, Bible scholar, a wonderful artist and a highly respected teacher and mentor. After retirement, he enjoyed having breakfast every weekday morning with his close friends, attending VBHS football games, traveling locally and abroad and spending special times with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor and friend to all. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Moree Benson Leatherman; 2 children, Dale Douglas and Evelyn Elizabeth and son-in-law, Harry Conner; 4 grandchildren, John Douglas, Isabelle Ann, Harry Conner and Michelle Grace; 2 sisters, Paula Hildreth of Aurora, IL and Ramona Gray of Ottawa, Canada; 2 sister-in-laws, Joyce Jackman of Vero Beach, FL and Elizabeth Jones of Utica, NY; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded by death of his father Henry, his mother Bertha, his sister Nancy, and his daughter Michelle Moree Leatherman. A time of remembrance and celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, May 30th, at First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, FL. Visitation will be from 1-2pm and a memorial service from 2-3pm, with a reception immediately following in the church Family Life Center.
