Gene Tenace

Class of 1965

From the time Gene (aka Steamboat) was just a little guy, he was not only a "good kid" but he was gifted with remarkable eye/hand coordination, which made him an outstanding baseball player. Gene led the Valley Indians to its first-ever state tournament appearance in baseball - - and he went on to establish himself as a premier major league baseball player with the Oakland A's. During the 1972 World Series, Gene was the first player to hit two home runs in his first two at bats, and after the A's shocked the Big Red Machine, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the series, hitting four record breaking home runs during that series. He continued his winning ways with the A's, Padres, Cardinals and others before ending his career as a coach with the Blue Jays. Gene has accumulated numerous World Series rings over his stellar career. Surprisingly, there is not even a photo of Gene at our High School. Let's correct this oversight.
