What is Mae West known for?

Mary Jane "Mae" West was an American actress, singer, screenwriter, and playwright, born in Brooklyn, New York, who had her first taste of stardom at Valley Center High School in Valley Center, California. Her career spanned an impressive seven decades, from 1907 to 1979. As an actress and performer, she was considered a sex symbol, known for her lighthearted, witty double entendres often delivered in a husky contralto voice. She was active in vaudeville and on stage in New York City before moving to Los Angeles to begin a career in the film industry.

Throughout her career, West was a controversial figure, particularly due to issues with censorship. However, she turned this circumstance to her advantage, famously saying, "I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it." Her audacious humor that often bucked conventional beliefs won her admiration among Depression-era audiences. After her film career ended, she was far from idle. She wrote books and plays, performed in Las Vegas and London, and on radio and television, and even recorded rock and roll albums. Her contributions to American cinema were recognized posthumously by the American Film Institute, who voted her the 15th greatest female screen legend of classic American cinema in 1999.

Born on August 17, 1893, in either the Greenpoint or Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, before New York City was consolidated, she was the eldest surviving child of her parents. Her mother, a former corset and fashion model, is of German descent, whereas her father, a former prizefighter, is of English and Scottish descent. She first performed professionally in her childhood neighborhood of Brooklyn at Neir's Social Hall in Woodhaven.

Her stage career began when she was just five years old when she entertained a crowd at a church social. By the age of seven, she started appearing in amateur shows and often won prizes at local talent contests. She began performing professionally in vaudeville with the Hal Clarendon Stock Company at the age of 14. As a child, she performed under the stage name "Baby Mae."
