About Vera Mangione, 83, of White Plains, died November 29, 2000 at home after a brief illness. She was born February 8, 1917 in New Bedford, MA to Mabel Vera and Ernest Kirschbaum. She married Edward Mangione on June 1, 1941 at Mt. Carmel Church in White Plains, and he died in 1972. She graduated Eastchester High School, was a Columbinette with K. OF C. Council #450, a member of American Red Cross in 1943, and she was an avid bingo player. She was a lifelong White Plains resident and member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in White Plains. She was a homemaker and grandmother and worked for the cafeteria for Virginia Road and Valhalla High School and was Assistant Manager for Kressges 5&10 in White Plains. Vera served in the Womens Army Corp (WAC) at Fort Bragg, NC, from 1942-1944, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Vera Kirschbaum was also the granddaughter of the famous William Guest Kirschbaum who was appointed by the Mayor of New Bedford, Stephen A. Brownell, as an agent in 1910 to the Board of Health as an executive officer. Mr. Kirschbaum was considered by State Officials, "an authority on Health Laws" and in 1919, he was chosen Head of the Massachusetts Association Board of Health. As a young man, William G. Kirschbaum was well known for his work in newspapers. The New Bedford Standard Newspaper, also known as the Standard Mercury. As a reporter and well known author of sea stories with this newspaper and published in magazines from the 1800's to 1937, he leaves a legacy of writings. Survived by one daughter, Janet Puleo and son-in-law, Joseph Puleo of Hopewell Junction, NY; two nieces, Joy Grenci and Judith Vaccaro, and one grandnephew, Paul Grenci, and one grandchild, Michele Orlando. Predeceased by one brother, William Kirschbaum.
