About | Class of 1980 Jan. 24, 1962- Dec. 16, 2003 Age 41 GALLUP, JAMES AVERY Jan. 24, 1962- Dec. 16, 2003 James Gallup, a native San Diegan, was born at Grossmont Hospital on January 24, 1962. He was the youngest son of Avery and Mary Gallup. James graduated from Valhalla High School in 1980, where he excelled as a student and athlete, swimming and playing water polo. He helped lead Valhalla High School ' s water polo team to consecutive CIF championships in 1978 & 1979. James attended UCSD's Revelle College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physiology in 1987. He also swam and played water polo for UCSD. James then entered Chiropractic school at Los Angeles Chiropractic College, where he received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1992. James and Shana, who met in chiropractic school, were married on June 21, 1992. After practicing in Orange County and Salinas, they returned to San Diego in 1995 and opened their own practice on Carmel Valley Rd. in Del Mar. The practice has been there ever since. James led a very active family life. He was a beloved father, husband, son and brother, who participated daily in the lives his children, wife and family. He was a healer who touched the lives of many. It was his chosen vocation. He was the friend of many, who positively impacted the lives of all who met him. As one whose life he touched said, "God is standing a little straighter and in a little less pain. " James is survived by his wife Shana; daughter Alina, and son Avery of Del Mar; mother Mary Gallup of Del Mar; brothers Richard Gallup of Carlsbad and Steven Gallup of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; sisters Roxanne Gallup of Louisburg, N.C. and Marie Murphy of Arroyo Grande, Calif. A memorial service will be held on December 22, 2003 at 2:00pm at Powerhouse Park, on Coast Blvd, at the bottom of 15th Street in Del Mar.
