Dear Urbandale Class of 1970,

The time has come to make a decision. We will not be having a reunion on 4th of July weekend, 2020.

After receiving 11 affirmative signup sheets (and startup money from several of you even before I sent the mailing), I have also heard from quite a few who don’t feel comfortable traveling let alone congregating with a bunch of other older American in these uncertain times.

It is also worth mentioning that Dr. Birx, of the Whitehouse Covid-19 Task Force, has stated that ‘social distancing’ will be with us through the summer.

When asked about the July 4th celebration on the Mall in DC, the President admitted that it will probably be less well attended due to social distancing.

Every event planned for our reunion will be difficult, if not outright impossible, to be held while social distancing. ‘How do I consume my drink with my mask on?’ ‘How can we oldsters hear each other if we stand 6-feet apart?’

Several have already changed their plans, and will not be coming in July.

When the situation changes, and we feel comfortable gathering in large groups, we’ll revisit our plans.


I’m very sorry that it turned out this way.

The reunion packets have been mailed. Two have been returned as 'unable to forward', one has already been set back to me filled out, and Thomas Kielty just said his didn't arrive(it was my fault). If you haven't received yours please contact me.

I'm hoping things in the world settle down soon. We may extend the deadline for signup. If we need to push back the reunion dates it won't be horrible, but July 4th weekend might not work.

I called my contact at Towneplace Suites (Marriott). She is out of the office today and will call me back. BUT I did talk to the general manager and he indicated that they will work with us on rescheduling our room block dates if that becomes necessary.

Two classmates, Tamra Phipps and Marybeth (Henryson) Lytle, have offered to host a brunch at Marybeth’s home on Greenbelt Circle in Urbandale. This will be a perfect end for our 50-yr. reunion weekend. Marybeth is inviting us starting at 11:00am, July 5th. She will, of course, need a headcount for planning.
