| About Me | Hi, my name is Steven Esquivel, but you can call me Steve. I have just graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology. Above all things, I'm grateful that I've survived death twice, for being a debt-free first generation college graduate, and for meeting wonderful and hard-working people throughout my life. I am very proud of my Mexican, Italian, and Spanish heritage; in fact, I am native to the beautiful state of California, where I've spent most of my life in San Diego. Intriguingly, I'm going to share with you the fact that I’ve had mentors in my life, my whole life, since I was 10 years old. And I haven’t had just mentors in my life, I’ve carried these people throughout my life like a Trojan horse. A lot of us are Trojan horses; we have the right kind of looks, we have the right kind of pedigree, we look good, we are sharp & insightful, we combed our hair, we brushed our teeth, we have underarm deodorant, we clean up well, we went to school and studied hard, we make others laugh, and a lot of people will accept us. I can sometimes carry on that look; wavy hair, clean dress shirt, clean pants, quoting Dr. Seuss, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, and then my mother’s voice comes out, where the hell did that come from? How did you become so smart Steve?, she always asks. Because I have people I carry with me like a Trojan horse. Those people, who shaped me and who informed me. Those people, who loved me and made me who I am today. I carry them with me, so that despite the fact that I’m a first generation college student, the fact that I’m going on to get a Ph.D., the fact that I have never forgotten the people who produced me. I carry them with me because they mean something to me; their love got me to where I am today. So when I get up off my bed, I’m a Trojan horse and I let all of those other people out of me out. I carry them with me because I understand the value and the virtue of education and discipline, and I also understand why it's important to not forget those who have been left behind. Those who made it possible to become who we are today. We must never forget them. We must carry them with us because our mothers, our fathers, and our brothers and sisters made...(read more) |
