Maria Holzapfel
Class of 1976
Army, 5 Years
Time Served: 1976 to 1981, tours in Germany and Hawaii. I was fortunate and had an opportunity to travel while I was in the service. The main destinations for work, rest & vacations were in Korea, Spain, Switzerland and France along with a lot of sightseeing while stationed in Germany and Hawaii.
RANK - when discharged in 1981: Sergeant
JOB/MOS: 36C – 72C, Telecommunications – Cable, Telephone, Switchboard installation operations, maintenance, etc.
A side note: 6 of my 8 brothers and sisters also served in the military at some point and both my brother Mark and John retired from the Army.

Enlisted with classmates Don and Ron Hixson.
Discharged from AF in 1959 to attend Pitt.
Commissioned 1962, selected for pilot training
Retired as Colonel in 1988. Flew combat rescue helicopters Vietnam 1970-70

Entered military on 17 march 1971. Did my boost camp at Fort Dix,N.J. I did my advanced course at Fort Lee,va. upon graduation i was assighed to the 101st Airborne Div. in Vietnam. After vietnam i was stationed in Mo. and PA before being assigned to Germany for three years. I spent a hitch at walter Reed Hospital and then back to Germany for several years with a hospital unit and then a combat equipment battalion. in mid 1990 i was assigned to 24th Inf. in georgia where i was sent to Desert Storm in Iraq before retiring in Aug 1991

Our United High School military alumni are some of the most outstanding people we know and this page recognizes them and everything they have done! Not everyone gets to come home for the holidays and we want our United High School Military to know that they are loved and appreciated.
