About | Renée Michèle Pretz Pernice was born April 28, 1973 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. Her parents are Linda D. (Alvey) Lockwood and Fredrick J. Pretz, III. She attended Oak Grove Elementary School, Pierson Junior High, and Turner High School. She graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1991. She attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence and graduated from the KU School of Nursing in 1996. She worked as a nurse in the Saint Luke’s Hospital System until August of 2007 when she was hired to teach at the Saint Luke’s School of Nursing. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri – Kansas City in December of 2007. Renée married Shon Pernice on May 13, 1999. They had two children: Joseph (Joey) Conlin Pernice and Nicholas Anthony Pernice. Renée built her life around her children. She was involved in all their school and sports activities. Renée loved her children dearly and stayed in her troubled marriage believing that was best for her children. Renée also loved her step-daughter, Cheyenne. Renée was a practical, multi-talented, and organized lady. She built a good life for her family. She bought her home and improved it by personally constructing front and back decks on it, installing new laminate flooring, new carpeting, new cabinets in the kitchen and baths, ceramic tile in the master bath and entry, and replacing the garage doors. Renée was great with projects. Renée really enjoyed planning and doing things with Joey and Nicholas. She signed the boys up for soccer, basketball and softball and took them to all their practices and games. She took Cheyenne to gymnastics classes. Renée looked forward to some day having a house with land in the country. She wanted to sit outside at night and look at the stars and just think. But, instead, on January 1, 2009, Renée was murdered by her husband, Shon Pernice. Her sister, Lisa, found out Renée was “missing” when she tried to call her on January 3, 2009. From the moment Renée’s family heard she was “missing”, they knew she had been murdered and by whom. Renée had told her family on Christmas Eve, 2008, that she was filing for divorce. She insisted there would be no change of mind this time. Renée’s family received numerous cards and phone calls from friends and relatives and appreciated all the kind words. The details of what transpired after the family knew Renée was “missing” are documented by news reports. On February 21, 2012, just 6 days before his trial was to start on a charge of 1st Degree Murder, Shon Pernice pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and admitted he killed Renée and threw her body in a trash dumpster. Renée’s sons, who were 8 and 6 at the time of her murder, were devastated when she went “missing”. And, even more so, when they learned their father had murdered her. They miss and love their Mother and wish they still had her in their lives. Renée’s mother and step-father were awarded guardianship of the boys in July of 2009. |
