Alumni Stories
Edward McDonell O'Brien
Class of 1937
I'm Ed O'Brien's younger daughter, Kathleen (O'Brien) Long, and I would love to tell you what happened to Dad after he graduated from Tupper Lake H.S. either in 1936, or 1937--we don't have a yearbook to search! Dad's mother died when he was just two years old, so he lived with his aunts Anne, Mary, and Catherine McCarthy at 25 Lake Street, while his father (Sr.) worked in New York City. When dad graduated, he went to work for Standard Oil of New Jersey in NYC. He was transferred to their refinery in Aruba, called ESSO, in 1938 or 1939, and worked there until about 1968. He was transferred to their Lake Maracaibo site in Venezuela. Dad was self-educated and became a manager in the ESSO administration, eventually becoming head of the safety and security/police departments. He was a member of Aruba's Rotary International and president for a time (maybe in the mid- late 1950's). If you would accept Dad's story, I'll figure a way to send you a photo of him, taken in 1938 probably. I visited Tupper Lake in October and met a lovely lady, a graduate from the local Catholic high school and a contemporary of Dad's. She remembered him!
