Byron Lee Tennant
Class of 1962
Marine Corps, 2 Years
BYRON LEE TENNANT
is honored on Panel 31W, Row 97 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Silver Star
Awarded posthumously for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Byron L. Tennant (MCSN: 0-106684), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 February 1969, Second Lieutenant Tennant's platoon was occupying a defensive position in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of hostile mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire and sustained several casualties. Reacting instantly, Second Lieutenant Tennant fearlessly moved about the fire-swept area shouting orders and words of encouragement to his men and directing their suppressive fire at the attacking enemy soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he continued his determined efforts as he fearlessly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire to assist in moving wounded men to covered positions. After assuring that the casualties were protected from further inquiry, he commenced maneuvering toward a vantage point from which he could observe the tactical situation when he was mortally wounded by the detonation of a hostile explosive device. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his platoon repelling the enemy assault. Tennant contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Richard Everhart
Class of 1966
Army, 3 Years
My three years was a busy and educational two and a half years. The military chose fit to teach me how to test and repair guidance sections for a two-stage nuclear missile. We were in the dessert in UT for a few months firing a few down to White Sands, NM, one of which failed countdown. They dismantled the missile and sent the guidance section down to the test and repair trailer and called me to 'fix it'. Which I did, and it went back to the firing site, and sent it off. That was the only time I saw the fruits of my labor put to use.
After that, I went to Germany for a year and a half. That was fun! That was one of the few facilities that worked Mon-Fri, 8-5. Woo Hoo!
Post military, I worked for AccuRay, Wang, Digital, Compaq, and a couple of proprietary computer-based hardware companies and traveled around the world - several times working in Japan, India, Israel, France, England, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, and all over the US.
