Graduation Year Class of 1984
Date of Passing Apr 05, 1999
About Terry Meyer, 32, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Chicago, passed away at his parents' home in Cedar Rapids on Monday, April 5, 1999, from complications of AIDS. A celebration of Terry's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where the family will greet friends from noon until service time. Deacon Jim Berger will officiate. Terry is survived by his parents, Robert and Rosemary Meyer of Cedar Rapids; his sister and brother-in-law, Vicki and Jef Smith; and a nephew and niece, Kent and Kati Smith, all of Plainfield, Ill.; his grandmother, Rose Lechtenberg of Cedar Rapids; and many, many wonderful and caring relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter Lechtenberg and Ray and Josephine Meyer.

He was born July 14, 1966, in Cedar Rapids, to Robert and Rosemary Lechtenberg Meyer. Terry attended St. Ludmila Elementary School, Wilson Junior High, Jefferson High School and the University of Iowa. He was a student at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago when his illness interrupted his studies. While living in Chicago, he had been employed at the Drake Hotel, Palmer House and the Radisson. Since moving back to Cedar Rapids 2 years ago, Terry became involved and active as an AIDS educator through the Rapids AIDS Project associated with the American Red Cross. He spoke at most of the area schools and visited monthly at ASAC, sponsored by Planned Parenthood. He was also part of the Buddy Program of RAP, whereby he tried to give hope and encouragement to newly diagnosed HIV patients.

At the time of Terry's death, he held a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He was an avid nature lover and environmentalist, loving to raise his own herbs and organic vegetables and flowers. He liked collecting old books and particularly loved going fishing with his dad. He had a special and loyal friend in his dog Edna.

His four favorite young people, Kent, Kati, Ashley and McKenzie, will always carry a bit of this loving, mischievous fellow tucked away in their hearts. His sense of humor was truly a gift and rarely failed him. His gentle, quiet, unassuming ways will forever be a part of the lives of the people who knew him well. He wanted or needed little with his greatest pleasures coming from the simplest things.

Grace to you, Terry, and peace.
Terry Richard Meyer

Thanks for inviting me into your life in Chicago from 1994 to 1999. I loved you with all my heart during those 5 years that we were best of friends, and I still love you to this day. Best wishes also to your partner Chris Swanson who still lives in Chicago as far as I know. I am doing well and think of you every day sweetheart. Our love for each other was very special for the both of us. I miss your sense of humor, your laughs together, my visits with you when you moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1996. I truly miss Edna as well. Give my best to your parents wherever they are. Take care honey. You are forever in my heart. I love you to death my love. Yours always, MICHAEL NEWMAN
