UCC 1-103 1-308 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WITHOUT PREJUDICE Now... I never know what to write when it comes to my life, I think of myself as kind of boring. Here are a few things that I have done; I was born in El Paso, TX. I consider Denver, CO my home and that is where I joined the Navy. I went to Boot Camp in San Diego; Submarine School in Groton, CT; and served on my first boat the USS Michigan in Bangor, WA. (That is where I met my lovely wife Kimberly). Soon after we went to Minneapolis, MN for shore duty. (There is where my passion for bicycles was lit, thanks to Elmer, Pat, Tom and the guys at Penn Cycle where Joel the wrench coined my nickname Hannibal!) From the land of 10,000 lakes we moved to Sunny San Diego for duty on the submarines USS Salt Lake City, USS Bremerton, USS Asheville, and shore duty at Performance Monitoring Team SD where I as promoted to Chief. We have lived in SD ever since, except the 10 month trip to Connecticut for training. In my travels I have been to Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Saipan, Okinawa, and Guam. On the home-front Kimi and I have travelled to all 48 continental states and Hawaii. We have done several road trips throughout the US, mostly through the Southwest which is perhaps the most beautiful part of the USA. Kimi and I will continue our travels and explore more of this and other countries. Late 2007, Bruce Bradford, a technical guru that I respected and trusted because he was the best and his expertise was unsurpassed in our field, retired as a civilian technical support. His boss asked Bruce for a recommendation to replace him and he said “I can only think of one person, Hector Castillo” I was floored to say the least. When his boss asked me if I would take the job, there was no hesitation. I dropped my request to transfer to the fleet reserves. The command resisted a bit, but finally agreed. May 1st 2008 was my first day as a civilian again. Even though I enjoyed my 7 month tenure as technical fleet support, I was offered a job at the Arctic Submarine Laboratory. Of course I accepted to be part of this elite group. Now I begin a new chapter in life, with all avenues ready to be explored. All of you are invited to tag along. Le...(read more)
