| About Me | Joanne E. Galliher AKA: ‘Joey’ Joanne was ‘made’ in the surf at Rosarita Beach, Mexico and ‘delivered’ between her folks’ 1951 Chevy and the entrance to Alameda Hospital, California. Without any labor and delivery room expenses, her folks had the down payment for their first home (Hayward, California). Lost in day-dreaming, Joanne took her sweet time mastering essential skills. Rather than ‘walk’, as a toddler, she crawled on one knee and ‘walked’ on the other foot. Learning to tie her shoes put her last in her Kindergarten class. Two-wheeler bike-riding was eventually conquered, but she was afraid to use the bike’s brakes. To stop, she would find a bush to run into. To everyone’s amazement, Joanne ‘bloomed’. She completed her B.A. in Speech Pathology in 3-1/2 rather than the usual 4 years and her M.A. in Communicative Disorders and her Teaching Credential in 1-1/2 years rather than the usual 3 years. Her 37-year career was diverse – speech pathologist, special education teacher, community project coordinator, employment case manager, case worker for adults with Acquired Brain Injury and for families in stress, fitness instructor, kitchen hand and holiday house cleaner...and a bit of ‘jillaroo-ing’ (helping out on a cattle property). As far as ‘Life Highlights’, Joanne has many. Top of the list, is being a mother for her gorgeous, blue-eyed daughter. In Kindergarten, the teacher taped her mouth daily, hoping to curb her talkativeness. She was a workshop presenter for ‘The National Australian Speech, Language, Hearing Association’ and she presented many child development/educational workshops. Squeezing their lives into three suitcases each, she and her daughter migrated to Australia in 1988 where they continue to live. She loved her 5 years of peace on her 25 acres of Australian rainforest, named ‘Place of Peace’. She embraced this ‘Thoreau Simplicity’ and austere life style. Life was happily simple --- no installed electricity or plumbing for the 1st three years, laundry done in a basin with a potato masher as the agitator and cooking by open campfire 90% of the time. Having wonderful neighbors such as Whip Birds, Kookaburras, Koalas, assorted reptiles and complete serenity, it took her 19 months to completed the first draft of her trilogy, Eagles of the Rainbow: An Awesome Hybrid A colourful heritage: Cherokee-Irish-German-Filipino-American, living ‘Unity in Diversity’, Volumes I – III. Joanne is still living ‘out-bush’, doing exercise & Yoga daily, and loving her simple life style, with gardening and writing taking up most of ...(read more) |
