About Me | After graduating from Tenafly High School in 1961, I attained a BA in French and Spanish from Denison University in Ohio, an MA in French language and literature from Middlebury Graduate School of French in France, and a PhD in same from Emory University in Atlanta. Music, however, remained my first love (singing and violin playing), and finally I quit a frustrating teaching job in Atlanta to concentrate on violin studies, eventually joining the Birmingham, Alabama Symphony. There I met my second husband, Herb Kaufman (1932-2012), an excellent violinist, and in 1980 we moved to Antwerp, Belgium to play in the opera orchestra there. The opera underwent various restructuring phases; Herb continued to play in the opera until his retirement in 1997, but I lost my position in 1988 and subsequently worked as an assistant in the Brussels office of an American law firm until my retirement in 2008. Unfortunately, Herb suffered a stroke less than two weeks after retiring and remained paralyzed on one side until his death. We managed at home with the assistance of nurses and wheelchair transportation for 14 years. He and his family were refugees from Cologne, Germany, settled in Ohio in 1940, and moved to New York in 1945, where Herb majored in music and also obtained a PhD in German language and literature, teaching at Queens College before landing in Birmingham as a violinist. Since my mother was German, I had studied German in college, and with Herb's encouragement and German contacts was able to improve my fluency. Since retiring, my main project has been studying and archiving a vast number of photos, German letters and other documents inherited from my maternal grandmother, including memoirs written by my grandfather (a Berlin psychiatrist) of his experiences as a doctor in the German army during the First World War. Herb translated these memoirs into English and annotated them in 1991, and I finally put them together with photos, maps and documents into a book, War Memoirs 1914-1918 by Dr. Harry Marcuse. Herb also published several books with lulu.com, including his autobiography (Pathways: a Life's Journey), which is interspersed with numerous short prose pieces. I later published the original German war memoirs, supplemented with many letters from my grandfather to my grandfather during that period, and then a book of the complete World War I German correspondence of my grandparents. My archive, which I donated to a branch of the history department at Vienna University (Sammlung Frauennachlaesse), has already been used by s...(read more) |
