About Me After leaving high school I was employed at Ohio Bell Telephone Company. A very short time later, I was drafted by good old Uncle Sam, so I exercised my option by enlisting in the Air Force. I spent most of my hitch on foreign soil, including areas around the Middle East; Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Oh, lets not forget Southeast Asia. I was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1971, after earning the rank of Sergeant. I attended college on the G.I. Bill in 1971, and graduated in 1974, earning a B.A. in Political Science with Honors from California State University, Sacramento. My employment history was quite diverse while going through college; everything from selling cars to working as a "repo man." I earned my California Secondary Teaching Credential in 1975, and landed my first contract at Burbank High School, where I taught and also coached track and field. I moved on from there, looking for a greater challenge, and taught at the Sacramento Job Corps Center, where I was promoted to Education Supervisor. Having worked successfully with "challenging" students, meaning inner city kids as well as Southeast Asian refugees, the Elk Grove Unified School District offered me the opportunity to teach in their "Alternative Education" programs. I was able to create new programs to assist jail inmates with their rehabilitation, as well as those attending school at the alternative education programs city wide. I designed, created, and implemented education programs for the Sacramento County Jail system, including the Main Jail, as well as Rio Cosumnes Correctional Facility. For thirty years, I enjoyed working with some of the toughest kids, and jail inmates in the State of California. I retired in 2014. I married my beautiful wife, Leora Bautista in 1982. Our daughter, Alyssa, is 27 years old and lives in Ocean Beach in San Diego. She is a Resource Specialist, and teacher in Special Education with the Chula Vista School Dis...(read more)
