| About Me | I attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia where I received two degrees concurrently: a Bachelors of Science in Science Education and a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry in May 1989. After graduation, I worked for the Virginia Tech Chemistry Department for two years as the Lecture Demonstrator. In August 1991, I went to work for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center in the Developmental Therapeutics Program. This division develops new drug leads for cancer and HIV from plant and marine sources. After four years, I left the NCI to pursue graduate education at the University of Georgia in Organic Chemistry. I completed my Masters of Science in Organic Chemistry in August 1998. While I was at the NCI, I took a leave of absence and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Training with the Army as an enlisted reservist. While I was a graduate student at the University of Georgia, I transferred to the National Guard and into the infantry. At the completion of my Masters degree, Specialist Silverman was commissioned in the Medical Service Corps of the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant junior grade Aerospace Physiologist. I completed training in Pensacola at the Naval Operational Medicine Institute (NOMI) and was “winged†as Aerospace Physiologist #242 in October 1999. I was the Assistant Department Head at Aviation Survival Training Center, Norfolk until I left active duty at the end of June 2002. I served in several reserve medical units, most notably as Officer in Charge of the Medical Unit of Marine Air Control Group 48, 4th Marine Air Wing. After I left active duty, he relocated to Columbia, Missouri where I worked for the University of Missouri – Columbia as an Instructor and Laboratory Coordinator for the Chemistry Department. I supervised over forty graduate teaching assistants and I managed over seventy laboratory sections per semester in eight different lab courses. Additionally, I taught several semesters of Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry laboratory classes. I was recalled to active duty as a recalled reservist for a tour as a chemistry instructor at the United Stat...(read more) |
