About	It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eric A. Schmelz, professor at the University of California, San Diego, formerly of North Tonawanda. He is survived by his wife, Alisa Huffaker and daughter, Sonja Schmelz of San Diego. Cherished son of Richard and Carol Schmelz, dearest brother of Karl (Karey) Schmelz and their two sons. Eric will also be sorely missed by his aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Events	Eric was a collector of full size historic RR memorabilia, particularly semaphore signaling devices. His photographs and articles were published in train magazines over the course of thirty years. In his career he made major scientific breakthroughs in agriculture, particularly in the field of plant disease resistance.
