| About | Manter, Kansas Elsie Evelene Ballinger Hammond was born March 21, 1926 in Buffalo, Oklahoma and went to be with the Lord on Friday April 21, 1995 at the Stanton County Hospital in Johnson, Kansas. Elsie was the first child born to James Martin and Winnie Bessie Ewing Ballinger. She attended elementary in Oklahoma and Kansas. She is the oldest girl, she practically raised her sisters and brothers. She nurtured them, laughed with them, and always made them mind. Her high school years were spent in Manter, Kansas. Elsie was married to Harry Clinton Hammond on September 15,1945 in Clayton, New Mexico; while he was serving in the army. They spent most of their married life in Stanton County. During this time, three children were born: Patricia, Delores, and Dennis. Her family was always close, they remember all the Sunday meals at Grandma's home where things rarely got dull. Sometimes when the children would be more ornery than normal, Elsie would remind them, "Now be good". Elsie resided in Johnson, Kansas and was a member of the First Baptist Church. She accepted Christ as her Savior at a tent revival in Manter, and she was baptized on October 12, 1952. Elsie was preceded in death by her loving husband Clinton on November 2, 1983. Others preceding her in death include her mother, father, brother, a very special nephew, and a great nephew. She is greatly missed by her beloved children: Patricia Roberts, Dodge City, Kansas, Delores Toole and husband, Ronald of Manter, Kansas, and Dennis Hammond of Johnson. Elsie is also survived by her beloved sister and brother and their mates. Alice Murray and her husband Melvin of Holly, Colorado; Ilene Herron and her husband Marvin of Manter, Kansas; Catherine Dillon and husband Eugene of Pueblo, Colorado; Bonnie Jones and husband Clayton of Goddard, Kansas; and James Ballinger and wife Alene of Tribune, Kansas. Others surviving and missing Elsie include six dearly beloved grandchildren: Bobbie, Trent, Krista, Janet, Britt, and Bailey. Also one great grandson, Cody, several very special nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Elsie was a very loving and caring wife, mother, aunt, and friend. She was always there for everyone, especially those in need. She was always ready to encourage, give advice, or cry with a loved one. A niece recalls, "She understood how you could be in a crowd and yet feel alone. Elsie was a night person and would spend hours talking to me or go joyriding in the rain. The night before she went into surgery she reminded me the lord is in control and what will be will be. We always said good-bye with a hug and a kiss." Elsie we will miss you, but your steady shining light has given us an example to follow, and we will cherish the memories. Precious Memories In the stillness of the midnight, Echoes from the past I hear; Old times singing, gladness bringing. From that lovely land somewhere. Precious Mem'ries, how they linger, How they ever flood my soul. In the stillness of the midnight. Precious, sacred scenes unfold. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/20477469/elsie-evelena-hammond |
