| About | Manter, Kansas Harold Russell "Rusty" Johnson, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born June 1, 1927, in Manter, to Harold Archie and Bessie Marion Garfield Johnson. He grew up on a farm near Manter and attended Manter High School, graduating in 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. On June 6, 1948, he married Betty O'Brate in Syracuse. They moved to Syracuse in 1953 and farmed there until retiring in 2002. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a past board member of the Hamilton County Soil Conservation Services and First United Methodist Church. He was active in the church, where he taught Sunday school. He also enjoyed reading, playing cards with his family, card clubs and the bright lights of Las Vegas. In his younger days, he played basketball on town teams and enjoyed all sports. He especially enjoyed watching his children taking part in athletics and school activities, and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Kelly Johnson of Syracuse, Randy Johnson of Prescott, Ariz., and Phillip Johnson of Dallas; two daughters, Terry Johnson of Chandler, Ariz., and Cheri Roberts of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one nephew; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Jean Johnson; and three sisters, Irene Damcott, Estella McElroy and Marion Kilgore.
