About Manter, Kansas

Marion Jeanette Johnson Kilgore, 80, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
Born Sept. 5, 1923, at Syracuse, in a rooming house one block south of the Ford dealership, she was the daughter of Harold Archie and Bessie Garfield Johnson. She attended kindergarten through 12th grade at Manter.
On Oct. 16, 1940, she married George William Kilgore at Fowler. In 1944, they moved from Manter to Syracuse, where her life centered around her husband and family. She was involved with the farming, including driving the wheat trucks, running errands and making home-cooked harvest meals. She also sold Avon and taught sewing and cooking to the 4-H clubs.
Mrs. Kilgore was a member of Syracuse United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing softball, swimming and singing and had attended the state bowling tournament several years. Once the couple's two daughters were grown, she and her husband enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, Friday night suppers with friends, and going to their grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities. After Mrs. Kilgore was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1996, she and her husband traveled the country to help fight the disease.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Jeanette McCracken of Holly, Colo., and Delores Jean Akers of Overland Park; a brother, Russell H. Johnson of Syracuse; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law; two sisters, Estella McElroy and Irene Damcott; and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, followed by the committal service at Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 4 to 8 p.m. MDT today and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Syracuse Cemetery Fund (general use) or Hamilton County Ambulance Service, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
