Orpha Estella McElroy, 82, formerly of Waterford, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Abington Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born April 18, 1921, in Syracuse, Kan., daughter of the late Harold and Bessie Garfield Johnson. She was a resident of Abington Crest for three years.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Summit United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Fun and Fellowship Class, the Women's Society and the choir.

She enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching sports.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman McElroy, whom she married in 1948 and who died in 1989; and a sister, Irene Damcott.

Survivors include a sister, Marion Kilgore and her husband, George, of Syracuse, Kan.; a brother, Russell Johnson and his wife, Betty, of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 105 Walnut St., Waterford, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James Fish, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church of Waterford, officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Corry.
Memorials may be made to the Summit United Methodist Church, 1510 W. Townhall Road, Erie.
