He was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Moscow, to Montgomery Wood and Lizzie Jane Gray Cott. When he was young, he moved from Moscow to Manter. He graduated from Manter High School in 1940.

After retiring from the co-op, he worked for Westlake Hardware. He was a former Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards with his grandchildren and, in his later years, he especially enjoyed building wood crafts.

On July 27, 1947, he married Willa Kathleen Barber in Ulysses. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, LaDonna Eshnaur of Norwich, and Venita Cott of Garden City; a brother, Wood Cott of Johnson City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney Cott; four brothers, Thomas, Boyd, Homer and Hugh Cott; and three sisters, June Bearce, Mary Cox and Mary Graham.
