About GALEN R. FISS, 75, of Leawood, Kansas passed away on July 17, 2006. A memorial service will be held at the Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral at 13th Street & Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri on Friday, July 20th at 1 pm. Galen was born July 10, 1931 in Johnson, KS. He was the son of Wilma Tucker and Herman Royce Fiss. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Nancy Lou Hampton Fiss. Galen was a 1953 graduate of the University of Kansas, a football and baseball varsity letterman at KU and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduation he was drafted by both the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns, although he initially served his country for two years as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He played baseball for the Fargo Twins a minor league club of the Indians in the Northern League. Galen was then offered a contract by Paul Brown and reported to the Cleveland Browns training camp in 1956 where he played the next 11 years for the Browns of the National Football League at linebacker. Galen served as a Captain of the team for six years; his career was highlighted with an NFL World Championship in 1964. He was an NFL Pro Bowl member in 1963 and 1964. After retiring from professional football Galen and Nancy returned to Kansas City, where he started his insurance career. He formed and was President of the G.R. Fiss Co. an insurance and surety bond agency now operated by his sons. He retired from the insurance business in 1999. Galen was a former member of the KU Athletic Corporation Board, past President of the K-Club, past member and President of Milburn Golf & Country Club, past President of Kansas Investors, past President of the Plaza Optimists Club, member of Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, and a former YMCA youth football coach for 10 years. Galen was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lawrence LaVerne Fiss of Johnson, KS. He is survived by his wife Nancy and three children, daughter, Leslie Fiss Young and husband Duane F. Young of Leawood, son Robert Brian Fiss and wife Kimberly A. Fiss of Prairie Village, and son Scott Hampton Fiss and wife Amy S. Fiss of Leawood. "Papa" adored his 10 loving grandchildren rarely missing a ball game, recital or swim meet of Christopher and Abigail Young, Alexandra, Kelsie, Galen Barret and Jacob Fiss, Caroline, Suzanne, Lauren and Bronwyn Gale Fiss. Most importantly, Galen will be remembered by his family and friends for his humble character, integrity and loyalty, as well as his rural western Kansas values of hard work and kindness. He will be dearly missed and his memory will be cherished.
