About Richard K. "Dick" Smith, 84, of Lawrence, formerly of Hutchinson, died peacefully, with family by his side, Sept. 4, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Dick was born Mar. 22, 1928, at Larned, the son of Arthur K. and Kendel Cade Smith.

He graduated from Johnson High School in 1946, and also graduated from Garden City Junior College in 1948. Dick was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years of service, and had previously worked as an agent for National Life and Accident Insurance Company. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M., the York Rites, the Silver Leaf Chapter #464 Order of Eastern Star, all of Hutchinson. He was a Past Grand Patron of Kansas OES and belonged to the Midian Shrine in Wichita. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Dick married Georgia Anne House, the love of his life, on May 7, 1950, in Johnson City, Kan. She died May 1, 2012.

After living in Johnson for several years, Dick and Georgia eventually moved to Hutchinson where they were actively involved in the community, raised their family and made their home for many years. In 2000, they moved to Lawrence to be close to family, always a priority in his life.

Survivors include: a son, Steve Smith; a daughter, Marsha Jones (Dr. David); a grandson, Greg Jones; a granddaughter, Kristen Gill (Jarrod); and two great-grandchildren, Treven and Kendel Gill, all of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Sheldon and Claire. He was the pillar of family strength, always offering a positive view of life. He was a man of honor, someone you could trust and someone to make you feel loved and safe. His ever-present smile and cheerful personality will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary, with Karen Atkins presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Masoleum, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with family to greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m., all at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of Eastern Star, Midnight Farm Therapeutic Horseback Riding, or the donor's choice, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
