| About | Pauline "Polly" Blythe, 68, longtime Garden City resident, died Jan. 24, 1996, at Garden Valley Retirement Village. Born March 12, 1927, at Johnson, she was the daughter of Paul F. and Myrtle Ford Hartley. She attended school in Johnson, moved to Idaho and returned to Johnson where she graduated from Stanton County High School. She attended a teachers college, received her teaching certificate and taught in Finney County for one year. Mrs. Blythe was personnel director for F.W. Woolworth Store in Garden City and later owned and operated Strings & Things Craft Store from 1974 until 1981. A Garden City resident since 1944, she was a member of First Christian Church, Eagles Lodge Auxiliary, and was a past leader for Finney County 4-H. She enjoyed craft work. On Dec. 23, 1945, she married James B. Blythe at Garden City. He died Sept. 7, 1988. She is survived by two daughters, Teresa Southern, Garden City, and Twila Rothenburger, Pierceville; two foster children, Freddie L. Hartley Jr., Garden City, and Jacquelin Sue McMichael Sherlin, Chino, Calif.; two brothers, Freddie L. Hartley Sr., Garden City, and Earnest L. Hartley, Ravenna, Neb.; a sister, Peggy Winter, Garden City; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home. Memorials are to the Alzheimers Association of Kansas, in care of the funeral home.
