About Elizabeth J. "Betty" Nickell, 86, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at her home in Johnson.
She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in rural Stanton County, to Marvin and Nina Schroeder Merrill. She graduated from Stanton County High School in 1945.
She married Gerald Nickell on Dec. 23, 1950.
A lifetime resident of Stanton County, Mrs. Nickell retired in April 1993 after 47 years at Johnson State Bank. She also was a bookkeeper for Nickell Construction, a family-owned soil conservation contracting business, for 13 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Joyce Meyer of Perryton, Texas; a son, Wayne of St. Charles, Ill.; two sisters, Marvina Gold of Springfield, Colo., and Maribeth Towns of Alva, Okla.; a brother, Harvey Merrill of Springfield; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Harold; a brother, Marvin Jr.; and a sister, Zellamaye Burkenbine.
Funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson. Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.
Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church to support the ministry of World Hope International, in care of the funeral home, Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
