ln 1932, Howard was adopted out of a Kansas orphanage by Mary and George Carrithers. His only known siblings are a sister, Blanche Bailey, mentioned in the adoption letters and a sister Anita Lee Sage, who died either in 1944 or 1945.



Howard enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in WWII. Howard and Polly separated September 1, 1975 and then were divorced January 3, 1979, he then married Thelma L. Barry, April 6, 1979, with the marriage ending in divorce December of that year. He was a large man and had a winning smile.
