About Kenneth "Keno" Scott, 81, died Friday at his home in Yuma.
Scott was born June 8, 1922, in Haggard, Kan., to Athol and Rosa Scott. During the Dust Bowl days of the 1930s the family relocated to a farm in Johnson, Kan., where he received his schooling. In the 1940s, they moved to a farm southwest at Akron. Scott's father owned and trained Thoroughbred horses as a part-time hobby. After graduating from high school, following in his father's footsteps, he became a noted owner/trainer, running his horses in many states.
He married Dorothy Salem Oct. 2, 1948, in Cimarron, Kan. They moved to Yuma in 1962, purchased Curly and Ernie's Cafe in 1963 and changed the name to Keno's Restaurant. After selling the restaurant in 1974, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., for three years, moving back home to Yuma when they purchased Beach's 400 Motel, changing the name to Keno's. A series of mini strokes and other illnesses forced Scott into retirement. He went into new ventures, from golf, piloting his plane, building a home for his family to racing horses.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, and two sons, Ken and Bill; two sisters, Bonnie Caneva of Fort Morgan and Lucille Smith of Brush, and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John, and one sister, Lavon.
A family graveside service will be held at a later date in Cimarron, Kan.
