Virgil Amos Shepard, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at his home in Johnson.

He was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Cullison to C.A. and Margaret Ralstin Shepard.

He came to Stanton County in a covered wagon in 1923. A graduate of Johnson High School in 1939, he was a farmer.

Mr. Shepard was a World War II veteran, serving as a machine gun crewman in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the rodeo club and St. Augustine Rough Riders, and he served on the 4-H Building Board, Stanton County Extension Council, Odd Fellow Lodge and VFW Post No. 3684 as a life member. He was an avid high school sports fan, enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Lucky 4 Square Dance Club.

On Jan 1, 1941, he married Faleta Parker in Stanton County, and the couple was chosen as the Pioneer Couple of the Year in 2004. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Steve Shepard of Johnson City; one daughter, Toni Hoskinson of Linn Valley; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oscar and Cecil Shepard; and three sisters, Sylvia Butcher, Ina Nafziger and Elsie Rouse.

Funeral was at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. Burial was at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson with military rites performed by VFW Post No. 3684.
