About Marthenia Winnifred (Roark) Jantz, 88, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at the Smith Health Care Center in Mountain Top, Pa.

Jantz was born May 24, 1915, at Elk City, Okla., the daughter of Waldo Walton Roark and Luella Gertrude (Cox) Roark.

She was a 1938 graduate of Johnson City High School. She married Clarence Jantz Nov. 1, 1941, at Garden City. In the 1940s, they purchased the Jantz homestead, south of Syracuse, and made a living on the farm until his death Oct. 16, 1978.

In 1979, she moved to Syracuse and volunteered in the community. She was a Girl Scout leader, a 4-H instructor for needlework crafts, active in Senior Center organizations and Check-In Charlie group. Since 1994, she has lived with her daughter, Diane, and son-in-law, Lee, residing in eastern Kansas, Colorado, Texas and for the past year in Mountaintop. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework crafts, reading and traveling.

Jantz is survived by a daughter, Diane (Jantz) Rudolph, Mountaintop; one sister, Maxine Bitner, Nickerson; two brothers, Curtis and Leon Roark, Animas, N.M.; two step-grandchildren, John Rudolph, Metropolis, Ill., and Shari Gamble, Marion, Ill.; and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Smith; and two brothers, Clarence and LaVerne Roark.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. MST Tuesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, Syracuse.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 409 N. Main St., Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel presiding. Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery, Syracuse.
