| About | Ivan Lee Nicholas, 87, of Johnson City, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City, after a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 9, 1916, in Pratt County, to Z.B. and Julia May Leiss Nicholas. The family moved to Stanton County in 1918 and homesteaded 8 1/2 miles south of Big Bow. Mr. Nicholas enjoyed farming and ranching, was a Stanton County commissioner for 34 years, and belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City. On June 12, 1940, he married Stena Cross at Johnson City. She died Nov. 17, 1998. He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Don Ivan Nicholas; two brothers, Herman and Winfred Nicholas; and a sister, Juanita Neeley. Survivors include three sons, Bill and Joel Nicholas, both of Johnson City, and Dr. Kenton Nicholas of Greeley, Colo.; two sisters, Gwen Pentland of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vada Mercer of Bullhead City, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City. Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, Stanton County Health Care Facility or the First United Methodist Church, all in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855. |
