| About | Obit states he graduated from Sylvia High School in 1935 but he is listed in the Stanton County High School Directory. Wilbur George Kinnamon passed from this life on May 4, 2015, at Leisure Homestead, Stafford. The second of five children, he was born to George F. and Carrie (Johnson) Kinnamon, on November 9, 1916, in the house his father built ¾ mile south of the home place 1-1/2 miles East of Sylvia, known as “Brookside Farm.” As a small boy, the family moved to Elkhart, Kansas, to farm during the “dust bowl days”. He was baptized into Christ in 1928 at Elkhart. The family moved back to the family homestead in 1934. He graduated from Sylvia High School in 1935 and was married to Betty Clothier in 1936, in the basement of her parents’ house in Windom. They lived on the family farm until 1941, when they moved to Wichita, where he worked at Boeing. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1945, where he was stationed in San Francisco. When the war ended, they returned to the family farm. Wilbur continued to farm during the summer and then moved with his family during the winters to Wichita, where he again worked at Boeing. In 1956, he quit Boeing and rented land north of Sylvia and farmed while working full time at Cessna Hydraulics in Hutchinson. Wilbur was a gentle, loving and supportive father and husband, displaying a Christian example to all that knew him. He served as an elder in the church of Christ at Sylvia for many years. He taught Bible classes and was a knowledgeable Bible student. He enjoyed life as a farmer and was a good steward of the land he farmed. He raised crops making good yields while using technology to make the land productive. He made certain the soils had the right nutrients through soil testing and was a pioneer in the use of fertilizer. He farmed until 2013 and lived on the family homestead until health issues intervened. As a machinist, Wilbur was a perfectionist and worked as a skilled tool and die maker until his retirement from Cessna in 1980, when he quit to farm full time. He enjoyed supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities and traveled many miles to watch them participate in sports. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Betty of 73 years; and one brother Virgil. He leaves to mourn: son, Jerry, ( Kay Guthrie); daughter, Carol Jo Stratton, (Bob); grandchildren, Kurt, (Cindy Dell), of McPherson, Clint, (Tara Birket), of St. John; great-grandchildren, Kaley, Kyler, Jace, (Kurt) Kade, Cole, (Clint); brother, Lynn, of Houston, Texas; sister, Vida, of Portland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Minnis Chapel, Stafford, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Leisure Homestead, Stafford, or In Search of the Lord’s Way, both in care of Minnis Chapel, Stafford. A family graveside service & interment will be at Hazen Cemetery, 2 miles east of Sylvia. |
